The End of the Isolated Specialist

I believe curious and AI-forward people will lead the next generation of industries.

Their advantage will come from following a problem wherever it goes. A product can begin with an engineering challenge and quickly reach design, psychology, operations, economics, or business. The person who understands these connections can solve more of the real problem and carry an idea further toward a complete product.

Specialization shaped modern work

Max Weber believed serious intellectual work required years of focus in a single field because knowledge had become too specialized for one person to master across several disciplines.

Complex fields were divided among specialists because learning each part took years. One person understood the database. Another understood the interface. Others handled infrastructure, research, marketing, or finance.

This structure produced deep expertise. It also created distance between the people building each part and the final outcome.

Karl Popper believed inquiry should follow the problem, even when it crosses disciplinary boundaries.

Even before AI, I found Popper's view more convincing. Expertise is essential, but it can also narrow our field of vision.

For most of history, broad learning was expensive. Crossing into another discipline could take months or years before even its basic language became clear. AI dramatically reduces that friction, making Popper’s idea of following problems across disciplines far more practical today.

A curious person can ask questions in the language they already understand. They can explore a new subject, find useful material, test ideas, and get feedback within hours.

Knowledge that once felt locked behind years of study becomes easier to enter.

That changes what a curious and driven person can do.

The isolated specialist loses ground

Specialists will remain essential. Many fields still require years of focused experience.

The weaker position is the specialist who works only inside an assigned boundary. When the task is already defined and the surrounding decisions have already been made, AI can increasingly handle much of the execution.

A specialist who understands the wider system offers more. They can challenge a poor definition, notice consequences outside their field, and shape the final result.

Generalists gain a different advantage. They can connect the work of several specialists and keep the entire problem in view. AI helps them enter each field with enough understanding to ask useful questions and make informed decisions.

The people who connect the parts will lead

Leadership here does not only mean managing people. It means deciding what should be built and carrying that decision into reality.

AI-forward curious people can move from the original problem to the technical system, the user experience, and the business model. They can understand a product and coordinate what is needed to build it.
